Smoke and Fire Curtain

Suntex provides the fabrics required for smoke curtains and fire curtains, which are now widely installed in various fields, including major buildings, ships, and naval vessels.

In a building, a fire curtain serves as a protective barrier, safeguarding and isolating areas from fire and smoke damage. As a crucial fire safety feature, it can be either fixed or automatically deployed during a fire.

Unlike a smoke curtain, it includes coated glass fabric reinforced with stainless steel wire for enhanced impact resistance, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1100°C for over 120 minutes.

When exposed to temperatures above 140°C, the coating system forms an expanding, foaming substance that provides thermal insulation.

This fabric is a stainless steel wire reinforced glass fabric with a specially formulated intumescent fire retardant graphite material. The material does not generate toxic emissions, and has a good resistance to hydrolysis whilst still having a flexible handle.

A smoke curtain in a building directs smoke—composed of gases and tiny particles released by burning materials—toward an extraction system, effectively shielding people from harmful smoke and limiting fire damage and spread.

Both fixed and automatic smoke curtains isolate areas to prevent smoke from moving between them. Typically, silicone or PU coated woven glass fabric is used, as it can withstand fire temperatures of up to 600°C for 60 minutes.

This material is composed of a technical textile, which consists of fiberglass. It is coated on both sides with polyurethane, a flame retardant material. The polyurethane coating serves several functions: it makes the fabric easier to handle, adds stiffness to it, prevents smoke from passing through, and protects it from unraveling.
